Places to stay

You must have a Great Walk Ticket to stay in huts or campsites on the Abel Tasman Coast Track. For information about how to obtain a Great Walk Ticket see fees, bookings and conditions.

DOC provides a range of accommodation along the Abel Tasman Coast Track, including four huts, 18 campsites and the Totaranui Campground.

Please note that overnight stays for Coast Track walkers are limited to one night at Totaranui campground and two consecutive nights in all huts and other campsites along the Coast Track.

Huts

Huts have toilets, cooking benches, tables, and heating. Communal bunkrooms have platform bunks and mattresses. Ablution blocks have flush toilets and washbasins with cold water only. There are no cooking facilities or lighting (candles or torches are needed). Potable water is usually provided at huts. Be prepared to boil, treat or filter drinking water if the DOC water filters are not working correctly. Hut users are expected to leave huts clean and tidy and take their rubbish out with them. Backcountry Hut Tickets and Backcountry Hut Passes are not valid for use on the Coast Track. Hut spaces need to be booked all year around and overnight stays are limited to two consecutive nights.

Campsites

All campsites have a water supply and toilets. Some campsites have cooking shelters and fireplaces. Open fires are only permitted where fireplaces are provided and when there is no fire ban in force. School groups, independent walkers and kayakers, and some guided walking and kayaking groups stay at campsites. Please be considerate of other visitors. Leave campsites clean and tidy and take your rubbish out with you. Campers are not permitted to use hut facilities. Campsites need to be booked all year around. Camping at Totaranui is limited to one night all year round, and at other campsites to: two nights in any one campsite between 1 October and 30 April; and five nights between 1 May and 30 September.
