If fishing is your thing Lake Taupo and its tributaries are world famous for the size and vigour of the Rainbow Trout.
The Taupo Fishery area is responsible for the management of the Taupo sports fishery. The rainbow and brown trout of Lake Taupo and its tributaries provide 30-40 per cent of the country’s freshwater sports fishing.
The north-east section of Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, and Pukepoto and Rangitaiki conservation areas are all located in the Turangi/Taupo area. Here you’ll also find numerous lakeshore and river access reserves.
Much of Tongariro National Park, along with the Tongariro and Erua forests and the Rangataua Conservation area are managed in the Ruapehu area.
