The Southern Scenic Route between Te Anau and Invercargill is a rewarding journey for cyclists, campervanners and motorists. The road skirts the eastern boundary of Fiordland National Park and the rugged south coast, providing an introduction to southern parts of the Te Wahipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
There are many points of natural and historic interest along the route and varied opportunities for recreation - camping, tramping, mountain biking, trout fishing, hunting, boating, and even caving.
The World Heritage Highway history features early Maori settlements, whaling and sawmilling. It has a large area of native forest, diverse wildlife and distinctive geological features.
There is no DOC accommodation along the World Heritage Highway but there is a range of other accommodation available.
The Southern Scenic Route between Te Anau and Invercargill is a 200 kilometre drive though Tuatapere and takes about two and a half hours by car and is sealed along the entire distance.
The Catlins Highway section of the Southern Scenic Route takes in the Catlins coastline and large tracts of native forest. Attractions include beaches, waterfalls and caves, wildlife viewing and the fossil forest at Curio Bay.
The Milford Road section of the World Heritage Highway is a unique journey into the heart of Fiordland National Park. You can admire the scenery from a vehicle or stop to discover short walks or viewing sites along the way.
