Hump Ridge, Waitutu

Southland region

Southland region.

Waitutu Forest is part of Fiordland National Park.

It covers a series of terraces and low ridges created by glaciers and rivers. Near the coast you'll find dense forests of rimu, miro, Hall’s tōtara and rātā. The lower terraces are mainly podocarp and silver beech, while the higher terraces are dominated by yellow-silver pine.

Waitutu is the location of the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track and the challenging South Coast Track. It is also a popular area for hunting and fishing.

Location

The Waitutu Forest forms part of Te Wahipounamu (south-west New Zealand) World Heritage Area. It is situated in south-west Southland and is signposted from Tuatapere.
