The Southland region includes some of the most diverse and magnificent areas of native forest and indigenous grasslands found anywhere in New Zealand. It is home to some of our our rarest and most endangered native birds. Here the kākāpō and takahē are making the long journey back from the brink of extinction and there are good populations of South Island kākā.
From the Takitimu Mountains to Lake Monowai and the Catlins Highway, the Murihiku area has a number of outstanding sites to visit.
The Southern Islands area includes the subantarctic islands and Ulva Island. The area also encompasses part of the Fiordland's Marine Reserves network.
The Te Anau area is the gateway to Fiordland's Marine Reserves and Te Anau Wildlife Centre.
