Long Island seen from Motuara Island, Queen Charlotte Sound
Long Island-Kokomohua Marine Reserve is located at the entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound. Encircling Long Island and neighbouring Kokomohua Island, it protects an environment typical of the Marlborough Sounds.
The reserve can only be reached by boat and snorkelling and scuba diving are the best ways to explore the reserve and meet its inhabitants. There are no jetties on the islands but a flat landing area (shingle spit, western side) on Long Island is a good site for picnics and base for bird-watching.
What features of the marine environment make Long Island - Kokomohua Marine Reserve special?
The best way to experience the reserve and its inhabitants is from the water. In addition to boating, snorkelling and diving there are also plenty of opportunities for bird-watching.
There are no accommodation facilites on either of the islands.
Find out how to get to the reserve, and review the rules and regulations that must be followed once there.
