The “top of the south” has many breathtakingly beautiful places to explore both on land and sea. Mountain peaks, vast high country expanses, tranquil bays, lush forests and rich marine life can all be experienced here.
The region is renowned for its outstandingly diverse geological landforms, plants and wildlife. DOC cares for more than 40% of the total land in the area including three national parks, Mt Richmond Forest Park, numerous reserves and islands.
From tramping the Mount Richmond Alpine Route to visiting Molesworth Station, the South Marlborough area features lands with incredible conservation and recreational values.
The Motueka area encompasses Mt Richmond Forest Park, the southern part of Abel Tasman National Park, and the mountainous headwaters of the Karamea and Motueka rivers which form part of Kahurangi National Park.
Half water and half land, the Sounds area is an intricate mosaic of bays, peninsulas and islands. The Queen Charlotte, Pelorus and Nydia tracks offer incredible recreational opportunities.
St Arnaud is the gateway to Nelson Lakes National Park. You can walk to Lake Angelus or take the Travers Sabine Circuit.
Known for its stunning scenery and natural areas, the Golden Bay area, features a number of tracks including the Abel Tasman Inland Track. Farewell Spit and Puponga Farm Park are other area highlights.
