The Whakanui Track takes you from Wainuiomata through to the Orongorongo River in the Rimutaka Forest Park. It can be walked as one way return or connect to the Big Bend and Orongorongo Tracks finishing at Catchpool carpark, or tramp through to the Wairarapa on the Papatahi Crossing via Shamrock and Wharepapa huts.
The Whakanui Track begins on the True Right side of Whakanui Creek and climbs to the long, flat ridge separating Whakanui Creek from Turere Stream, before descending to Hine Road/Sunny Grove in Wainuiomata. The track passes through podocarp/broadleaf forest for most of its length. Good views of the main Rimutaka Range can be obtained from the higher parts of the track (around 700 metres altitude).
The Whakanui Track begins at the Hine Road recreation area in Wainuiomata.
Know before you go
Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
