Fishing

The Koranga and Kahunui streams, and the Waioeka River provide opportunities for trout fishing. You'll need a fishing licence from Fish & Game New Zealand.

    Nature and conservation

    Whio or blue ducks can be found at the headwaters of the Waioeka River and tributaries. New Zealand falcon can also be seen, as well as kākā, kiwi, and other common bush birds (including kererū). 

    Getting there

    Access to the Waioeka Conservation Area can be found:

    • Off SH2 on Redpath Rd (via Wairata Rd) approx. 40 km from Opotiki
    • Moanui Rd (via Te Wera Rd), 87 km from Opotiki
    • Koranga Valley Rd
