Awatere Hut
Awatere Hut

Located in Ruahine Forest Park in the Hawke’s Bay region

This is a basic six-bunk hut in the Hawke's Bay region.

Built in 1960, the hut is situated in beech forest at an altitude of 600 m.

Awatere Hut is ideally located for a day or weekend trip. It's close to the road end so is a popular hut for novice trampers.

Note: Black Stag Biv is located 10 mins walk down stream from Awatere Hut, and not recommended as accommodation as it is in disrepair.

Awatere hut was renovated by Backcountry Trust volunteers in February 2024.

Around 100 km from Napier or Palmerston North, turn off SH 50 onto Makaretu Road, then into Mill Road – the first road on the left. Mill Road becomes gravel after 7 km – continue on for a further 4 km, then turn left into Kashmir Road and follow this to the car park at the end.

We recommend 4WD or AWD (all-wheel drive) on Kashmir Road due to its steepness.

From Kashmir Road: 1hr/2.7km
