Bay of Islands Walkways Trust

The Bay of Islands Walkways Trust has constructed an off-road walking track from Okiato to Russell, linking to the existing Paihia to Opua coastal track via the vehicle ferry which runs from Opua to Okiato.

About the walkway

The Okiato to Russell walkway is a 5-hour circular day walk which utilises the Russell to Paihia passenger ferries. There are many options for start and end points so you can do as much or as little as you choose.

The walkway is in 4 easy stages:

Points of interest:

  • Mangrove boardwalks
  • Historic: site of manganese mining, and first NZ capital
  • Birdlife of bush, wetland & coast
  • Vineyard
  • Oyster farms
  • Heritage trails around Russell (brochure available Russell Museum)
