South Marlborough recreation volunteer opportunities

Volunteers are invited to join the DOC team and help maintain buildings and tracks in the South Marlborough area from November 2013 until March 2014.

Be part of our crew and work with DOC rangers for a few days a week on these important visitor and historic maintenance projects.

Information for volunteers

Number of volunteers: 1-3 volunteers required per week, you can do multiple weeks. Booking will be based on a first come, first served basis by completing the application form.

Required: 8:30 am start on Monday to 4:00 pm finish on Thursday (unless otherwise stated). Daily volunteer hours 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Fitness levels are: Medium: Capable of tramping with pack up to 4-8 hours or High -capable of tramping with pack up to 8 hours plus.

Transport: Own transport is required to Marlborough District Office, Gee St, Renwick.

Accommodation: Rarangi Surf Club at Whites Bay, Onamalutu House on the Northbank, or standard backcountry huts or tents. There is weekend accommodation available at the Surf Club or Onamalutu.

Food: Is supplied (except for Molesworth Camp hosts), please notify us of any special dietary requirements.

Isolation Hut upgrade FULLY BOOKED

Major hut upgrade, some heavy lifting. Trade/building skills required.
Dates: 18 – 22 November;  25 – 29 November
Accommodation: Standard backcountry hut, Isolation Hut
Fitness: High level required
Transport: Foot and helicopter
Volunteers required: 1 

Isolated Hill Scenic Reserve, Napoleon bivvy area FULLY BOOKED

Track clearing and track maintenance.  Will need to walk with full packs for a couple of hours to get to the work area.

Clarence Reserve hut maintenance FULLY BOOKED

Cleaning and maintaining various huts in the Clarence Reserve, installing new signs.
Dates: 16 – 20 December
Accommodation: Standard backcountry hut
Fitness: Medium level required
Transport: Vehicle
Volunteers required: 3

Molesworth Cob Cottage campground host

Camp host responsibilities include collecting camp fees, cleaning toilets, providing general information and radio communication with the DOC office.  Full training and induction will be provided.

Week-long (from Monday to Monday) positions are available between 26 October - 30 December 2013 and 10 February - 21 April 2014. (The period from 31 December - 9 February will be covered by DOC staff).

Accommodation: The campground is at the northern end of the Acheron Road, 122km from Blenheim, or a 3 hour drive north from Hanmer Springs through Molesworth Station along the Acheron Road.  The road is accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles. There is separate accommodation for camp hosts in a modern (2004) rangers hut with shower, kitchen, a double bed with a single bunk above it, and solar-powered lighting 

Fitness: Medium level required

Transport: Own vehicle

Volunteers required: Self-reliant people with some knowledge of the area or backcountry skills, able to commit to a week and attend a half day induction / training workshop. Note that dogs are not permitted on the Molesworth Station.
