Friends of Gordon Park
Friends of Gordon Park help DOC to conserve this precious remnant of Kahikatea dominated forest. The reserve is located only 3 minutes drive from Whanganui. It has well maintained tracks which make a nice easy walk for the whole family.
One of the most important jobs is weed control. The native plants struggle to compete with the array of weeds like Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) and Stinking iris ( Iris foetidissima) just to name a few. Other fast growing seedlings also need to be controlled like Karaka trees even though they are natives.
As well as reducing the weeds in the reserve we hope to improve the forest as a habitat for birds. Monitoring and possum control also takes place and volunteers can get involved in this.
