The group is a non-profit organisation comprising residents from the Pakihi Valley (near Opotiki) and other interested people. It was established in May 2003 to preserve native flora and fauna.

The Pakihi Valley is characterised by native and exotic forest. Aside from the rich plant life, it has an array of birdlife; including North Island weka, North Island brown kiwi, whio, native falcon, tui, bellbird and kereru. Long tailed bat, tusked weta and hochstetters frog are also present.

Pakihi Valley Care Group

The pristine Pakihi stream boasts both brown and rainbow trout, and is a tributary of the Otara River which eventually meets the sea at Opotiki.

You can help

The group meets every two months on a Sunday afternoon and is always looking for new members or helpers.

They hold working bees to clear weeds, maintain a trapping roster for stoats, and undertake tree plantings with local schools.
