Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve ten year anniversary celebration
Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve, approximately sixteen kilometres north of Gisborne and covers an area of 2450 hectares. It was established in 1999 the result of a joint application between DOC and tangata whenua, Ngati Konohi of Whangara.
DOC staff and the local Marine Reserve Committee members are encouraging families to pack a picnic and join the celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve.
Family Fun Day Saturday 21 November
A Family Fun Day will be held at the reserve on the afternoon of Saturday, 21 November. In case of bad weather, the venue will be Whangara Marae, Pa Road, Whangara, Gisborne.
The celebrations will include:
- a presentation on research in the marine reserve by Debbie Freeman (DOC Scientist)
- guided tours of the reserve
- snorkelling
- face painting
- fancy dress and sand-castle competitions
- and the Happy 10th Birthday Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve photo competition prize-giving.

Arrangements have also been made for a special screening of the documentary film “The End of the Line” at the Gisborne Dome Cinema on Sunday, 15 November 2009 at 6pm with door sales on the day.
