Stewart Island/Rakiura huts in good order thanks to rotary club

The well maintained 13 visitor huts and three shelters that you see on Stewart Island/Rakiura are thanks to the hard work and yearly commitment by the Winton Rotary Club.

Since 2002 club members have rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their labour to help keep the huts in good order and looking smart.

Keeping the huts in good order

During each visit the six to 10 volunteers paint two or three huts and carry out general maintenance, reducing the need for expensive repair work in the future and increasing the huts’ lifespan.

Without the Winton Rotary Club’s support and service over the years the huts may not have enjoyed the full life that they continue to have.

The hut paint project started after a hut in Rakiura National Park was moved and a new track to provide access was needed. The club offered to not only complete the track but expressed interest in lending a hand to other projects.

In 2007 the club's members constructed 750 metres of wooden walkway for Enderby and Campbell islands, part of the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands group, for the Department.
