Bushy Point Restoration Project

Restoration project brings back native species for locals to enjoy

The Otatara Landcare Group is attempting to return the exotic back to native by undertaking a 50-100 year restoration programme at Bushy Point.

The group aims to turn Bushy Point into a self-sustaining eco-system and provide you with natural features such as wetlands, native plants and birds to enjoy and appreciate.

The Otatara Landcare Group is made up of people from Otatara who are interested in the local environment. Since 1998 they have been promoting and enhancing the natural features and ecological values of the area.

Restoring the Bushy Point area

In 2000 the group began managing a 14 hectare section of grazed conservation land. This land is now being replanted with native forest species to provide a corridor for native birds and enhance the existing forest systems.

The group has also designed and erected two interpretation panels. In April 2008 the Bushy Point self-guided walk was opened.

The ongoing revitalisation of the area is creating a fantastic recreational asset, not
only for the Otatara community, but for the whole of Invercargill.

Bushy Point is located on the New River Estuary, 8km from Invercargill.
