Hon Dr Nick Smith

Hon Dr Nick Smith, the National Party MP for Nelson was appointed Minister of Conservation on 31 January 2013.

He had previously served as Minister of Conservation from 16 December 1996 and 10 December 1999.

He has a first-class honours degree in civil engineering and a PhD from Canterbury University in landslides.

His contributions as Minister of Conservation have included the creation of the Kahurangi and Rakiura National Parks and twelve marine reserves.

Associate Ministers

The Minister of Conservation has two Associate Ministers:

Member for Ohariu and Leader of United Future

Hon Peter Dunne was appointed Associate Minister of Conservation on 21 January 2014.

He was previously Associate Minister of Conservation between 5 December 2011 and 7 June 2013

The Associate Minister’s delegated responsibilities relate to all matters relating to:

  • The establishment and ongoing progress of the Game Animal Council
  • Aerially-assisted trophy hunting and wild animal recovery operations
  • Associate Minister of Conservation, Hon Nicky Wagner.

  • Hunting on public conservation land, including firearm safety but excluding the hunting of game birds

Hon Nicky Wagner

National Party Member for Christchurch Central

Hon Nicky Wagner (Formerly Chair of the Local Government & Environment Select Committee and Parliamentary Private Secretary for Conservation) was appointed as Associate Minister on 7 May 2014.

Her delegations are for all matters relating to community partnerships, conservation boards and conservation in the Christchurch city rebuild.
