Trail maintenance improves Rainbow Mountain track

Date:  15 October 2009

If effort equals reward then the expansive 360-degree views from the summit of Rainbow Mountain are one of the best rewards to be gained by walking to the top – even if the effort just got a little easier.

Maintenance has just been completed by the Department of Conservation on the track up Rainbow Mountain.

The top 500m of track has under gone a complete overhaul explains Simon Alefosio-Tuck, Visitor Assets ranger at Rotorua Lakes “The track has been suffering from erosion from water over the last couple of years. In places the water channels were up to one metre deep”

To remedy the effects maintenance has been undertaken to up grade the track. “The track has been reworked via a small digger, re-grading the track and ensuring that run off and drainage is achieved”

“I rate this track as one of the best in Rotorua for the awesome views” says Simon.

A moderate tramping track leads up through regenerating native vegetation and geothermal ridges for a three-hour round trip to the summit, which has extensive 360-degree views over the region including Mt Tarawera, Te Urewera and Mt Ruapehu.

DOC is hoping to undertake further work to upgrade the car park on SH 5 including at picnic area and toilets in the future.
