Taronui Bay Recreation Reserve open to all

Date:  19 December 2007

Walkers, swimmers, snorklers and surfers now have pedestrian access to the 18 hectare Taronui Bay Recreation Reserve.

“This is a good Christmas present to be able to deliver to the people of Northland and to visitors,” says Katrina Upperton, the programme manager for visitor and historic assets at the Department of Conservation’s Bay of Islands area office. “It’s a special place to be enjoyed by all.”

The access follows consultation with iwi and with landowners whose properties boundary the access.

DOC’s tracks team has widened the track, put stiles in place to prevent damage to the farm fences and gates, and marked the conservation access with orange plastic waratahs.

A carpark is signposted, and at the entry point there is an orientation sign which features a map of the route to Taronui.

“We do ask visitors to keep to the marked route, to take home whatever they take in, and  please enjoy the Taronui Bay Recreation Reserve; but no vehicles, dogs, fires, camping, or hunting, “ says Ms Upperton.
