The DOC Youth Development Programme is funded by the Ministry of Youth Development. It gives young people an opportunity to develop skills and gain valuable experience, while working in conservation. Also included are a wide variety of challenges in outdoor adventure and education that can help empower young people to make more of their futures.

Similar programmes, sponsored by a number of provider agencies, operate at different locations around the country. The only course directly run by DOC is the Otago Youth Development Programme - Dunedin.
